Sega Game Gear

Game Gear

I was recently donated this Sega Game Gear and it's accessories, but it doesn't work, it appears to power on with a white screen with random horizontal lines all over it. Like a lot of other retro electronics, it probably needs a recap, so I'll add that to my "to-do" list.

You can find out more about the Sega Game Gear here

It's quite a large unit, but not too heavy. The front features the D-Pad, A and B buttons, and a Start button. The screen, mono speaker, and power LED is also here. The rear of the unit features the cartridge slot, two battery compartments that need three AA batteries each. The top has a volume dial, headphone socket, external connector, external power jack, and the power switch.

The Game Gear eats through batteries like they're free, plentiful, and not harmful to the environment in any way. So it was common to have some sort of rechargeable power solution. These ones clip into the battery compartments and can be charged via an external power supply. I tested the power supply and it's putting out nearly 16 volts unloaded, it's supposed to supply 9 volts, so I haven't plugged it in to test it.

The charger for the battery packs fits the external power connector for the Game Gear, and is supposed to supply the correct voltage and polarity, so that's a nice feature

Software

I have six game cartridges for the Game Gear

Streets of Rage
Ax Battle
Chuck Rock
Alien 3
Columns
Putt & Putter

Now I just have to get the console repaired...
